Anything other contribution:
How can deep-ocean management/conservation be successfully funded when interest groups advocating protection of inshore systems are far more effective? This is playing out now in the US where inshore advocacy for habitats, socio-economics, human health vastly out number any group calling for deep awareness and action. It can be anticipated that very little money for post-Macondo restoration will be spent beyond state jurisdiction. Deep advocacy is at a distinct disadvantage in a struggle for funding.

3 priority science questions that need to be answered:
1. What are the highest priority areas for protection\conservation of the vast deep mud bottom? 2. What if any are the ecological dependencies of the upper ocean on the deep ocean? 3. Can decadal shifts in the permanent thermocline or the associated global oxygen minimum be unequivocally identified?
